The key to effective use of autosomal genetic genealogy is to identify the common ancestor in each matches tree. I now have seven matches with various ancestors of Owen Cottrell.
1 Match with descendant of ancestor of Asher Cottrell born 1810 predicted most common recent ancestor using GEDMATCH utilities was 6.4 generations. Common Ancestor Identified as Hiram Cottrell who was Owen Cottrells great great great grandfather born 1783 Virginia which is 6 generations back as predicted.
2 Match with descendant of ancestor of Eva Myrtle Gibson wife of William Cottrell. Common ancestor Identified as Johann Michael Mueller (Miller) (1692-1771)

6 Match with descendant of ancestor of Sarah Catherine Spillars wife of John B M Cottrell . Ancestor identified as Thomas Valentine Hollingsworth Birth 1 May 1661 in Belleniskcrannel, Armagh Co, Ireland .
7. Match with a descendant of Obediah Cottrell who we believe was the brother of Asher Cottrell and George Birdwell Cottrell. All three descendants of Obediah,Asher and George Cottrell match each other in the 5 to 6 centimorgan range which is right in line with what one would expect for a descendant of a 1783 ancestor. There are strong indications that we would share ancestry with either Hiram Cottrell or his father.
These seven matches with ancestors of Owen Cottrell adds to my lengthening list of evidence of my genetic connection to Owen Cottrell and the Cottrell family.
Note to protect the privacy of our volunteer testers we only reference the common ancestor.
