Mark’s Genetic Genealogy Research Project
Welcome genetic cousins and other visitors who have found their way to capeflier.com and my family history research pages. Genetic cousins from 23andme, Family Tree DNA, and GEDMatch.com will find the resources here to help us locate our common ancestors.
I am especially interested in genetic connections with ancestors and descendants of the following families:
- Owen Cottrell from Cement City Michigan
- Phillip J Taylor Tell City Indiana
- Barbara Sproul of Massachusetts
Even if you are not connected to any of the above families I hope you will work with me to find our common ancestor. This is very important to me and your help will be forever appreciated. The links in the menus to the right include family histories to assist matches in finding our connections.
As an adoptee I am twice blessed . First I was welcomed by my Mom and Dad into a loving delightful family as their own child with a caring brother and a whole boatload of awesome cousins. Second I am blessed because thanks to genetic genealogy I am now finding connections to my genetic roots with wonderful sisters and a delightful group of cousins. Finding my genetic roots has resulted in a new understanding of my sense of self and a very complicated identity.
I still have a lot of work to do to finally get the answers I have spent decades looking for and I hope those who can help will show compassion and join my project. In addition, I hope that members of the Cottrell , Toman , Gibson, Taylor, Howell and Covey families and their cousins will also be willing to help fill in pieces of my missing family history in the search for truth.
If you or someone you know is willing to help I will be forever grateful if you would contact me at mark@capeflier.com The information you provide will help document the family history for generations to come.

Finally descendants and siblings descendants of Lucy Toman (Cottrell) , Darke County Ohio , and descendants of George Leon Toman, Ohio all are encouraged to contact me.
I would especially welcome participation by any of Owen Cottrell’s children should they have a change of heart and be willing to help me with the answers I have spent a lifetime looking for. Please understand that we use genetic genealogy test results for genealogical family research purposes only. Contact me at mark@capeflier.com for information about how to participate.
Philip J Taylor of Perry County Indiana Genetic Genealogy Free Test Offer
I am also interested in members of Philip Taylor’s family participating in my genetic genealogy project because Philip J Taylor also served on the USS Shenandoah, the Navy Destroyer Tender that made a stop in Boston in August of 1953. According to my birth mother Philip Taylor was with Owen Cottrell the night I was conceived. While all the evidence points to Owen Cottrell being my birth father it only makes sense that I include Philip Taylor’s ancestors in my genetic genealogy project. I hope my existing genetic matches will take the time to do a quick check for any Taylor, Covey or Howell connections.
I hope that members of Philip Taylor’s family of Perry County Indiana will consider taking the free Family Tree DNA Family Finder test to help in documenting family history. If interested contact me at mark@capeflier.com
More information about the genetic genealogy project is located at the Taylor Genetic Genealogy Project page.
Great new research tools at Ancestor-projects.com
The Cottrell Family Research project is for genetic cousins working together towards a better understanding of Cottrell family history. Anyone with a GEDmatch.com match with a possible maternal, paternal or adopted connection to the Cottrell family is welcome to join.
While our research focus is on the descendants and ancestors of Hiram Cottrell who died 1854 in Bowersville, Greene County Ohio we are also looking for ancestral connections between the various other family lines. For more information see our blog post on the Cottrell Family Research Project blog post.
New to genetic genealogy ?
If you have just received your results and don’t know where to begin I am happy to share what I have learned and help you get started on this fascinating look into our family history. Over the next few weeks I hope to expand the information available here. Often a few minutes on the phone with someone who can help explain how it all fits together can save you hours of frustration. If I can help send me an email with some background and we will connect.
A word about passwords
To protect family privacy a password is required for certain sections . The genealogy, pictures file and document archives each have their own distinct password as they are of interest to different people. Please email me with your connection to the family or the genetic match information you are researching and the section(s) you would like the password for. Passwords are freely available to anyone with a connection to the family so feel free to email me.
