-----------------------------------------------There continues to be questions as to whether Asher Cottrells father was Hiram Cottrell or John Lemuel Cottrell. There are two schools of thought on this. One is that Asher is the Son of Hiram Cottrell who was born early 1780s in Virginia. It is then believed Hiram went to Tennessee to Sullivan County and then Hawkins County for a while before settling in Greene County Ohio. Hiram Cottrell dies of Cholera in 1853 in Bowersville,Ohio . It is also believed that he married Elizabeth Reaves but no record has been found of this marriage anywhere. Interestingly the other Reaves daughter Catherine Reaves married Lemuel Cottrell and we do have a record of that marriage.
The other thought is that Asher Cottrell was the son of Lemuel Cottrell or possibly John L Cottrell. In any case they both appear to descend from a John Cottrell born 1743 in Virginia. There are eleven versions of this John Cottrells family on Ancestry.com with three different wife combinations. What is very interesting is that there are three living descendants that appear to have similar haplotypes that feature a unique Y-DNA value of 385b=11 linking them back to this individual through three distinct lines. One is through George Birdwell Cottrell who we believe descends from John Cottrells Samuel Lemuel, Lemuel, or Hiram Cottrell another is through Daniel Cottrell who we believe is a son of John through perhaps a later marriage with Mary Pearson and the third is a possible descendant of Asher Cottrell through either John Cottrells son John (Lemuel) or Johns son Hiram. To help sort this out we are offering free Y-DNA tests to the descendants of Asher Cottrell, see below.
Free Y-DNA Genetic Genealogy tests will be available for a limited time on a first come first serve basis to those adult males with a Cottrell surname who can document that they descend from any of the male Cottrells in this list and meet a few other minor requirements.

This is miscellaneous information only, actual photographs of these stones are available from the book "Holsapple Cemetery, Darke County Ohio" By Roger R Spencer & Rebecca (Houdeshell) Stephens 2004. Stephens and Spencer have photographic readings available of numerous other area cemeteries including Shooks. They are to be commended for their efforts in preserving this piece of history and I hope people will support them in their efforts. Their books are very affordable. The Holsapple cemetery book for example was $25.00 including shipping and handling and includes 500 black and white photographs of stones. More information and order forms are available at
http://www.dcoweb.org/bookstore/SScemetery/index.htm
I have no affiliation with Stephens & Spencer just a grateful customer. Until I can visit Holsapple myself this is the next best thing.
